A MIDSEASON REVIEW OF 1st XI PERFORMANCES:
Well we are half way through the season and Christmas has been and gone. Now brings the business time of the year! It’s been a great start to the season by the boys, only losing our opening game against Heights, in which we only lost by 5 runs. We are currently sitting second on the ladder, still with a lot of work to cement ourselves in the top 4 by the end of the home and away season.
Rnd 1- (Sunshine Heights 9/128 def SUCC 10/123) our opening game of the season was against sunshine heights playing off for the Jim Peter Cup. We unfortunately lost the game by 5 runs in a tightly contested game. Top performers from this game were (Norris 37 * Higgins 30 Indy 3-18 and Sheridan 2-25)
Rnd 2- (Deer Park 10/128 def by SUCC 10/171) our first home game was a Success with a good win over Deer Park for the Reg Undy Shield. Indy batted really well for 86 and helped us chase down the total 3 wickets down. Not only did Indy bat well, he also was the pick of the bowlers with a handy 4/41 off 20 overs. (Indy 86 Dalrymple 24 Indy 4/41 Sheridan 2/28)
Rnd 3- (SUCC 6/243 def Foots ANA 10/97) With the top order crumbling early it was Dan Raniolo (50) and Foota (91*) who saved us from a below par score. Once Dan was dismissed Henry took over from where Dan left off and made a great (59) really lifting the scoring rate towards the end of the day. At one stage we were 4/48 so it was a great effort to end the day with 243.
Wacky, Indy and Leigh led the charge with the ball all taking 3 wickets for not many runs. And it was a very dominant win in the end.
Rnd-4 (Wyndhamvale 8/135 def by SUCC 5/136) Wyndhamvale started really well being 0/80 after 20 overs. From the 20 over mark we tightened the screws and only allowed them to get 55 runs from there last 20, which was a great result for us. Leigh led the bowlers beautifully taking 5/23 off his 8 overs with wacky and Indy taking 1 each also. Our batting innings started slow but eventually partnerships formed resulting in us getting the score with an over to spare. (Norris 59* Popinski 27* Sheridan 5/23)
Rnd-5 (SUCC 10/80 and 7/172 def Newport Digman 10/74) As a player in this game it was one of the best wins I have been apart of. The last 5 overs of the first innings were incredible! The game started with us been sent in on a wet sticky wicket which was quiet tough to bat on. Scooter braved the bowling for around 50 overs and even though he only had 17 on the scoreboard his time at the crease proved very valuable and got us to a score of 80, which we ended up defending. We bowled 20 overs on the first day and had them 4 for not many over night with wacky taking 3 wickets. The second day started slow for us and we didn’t take the fifth wicket until they had reached 43, from there we took very regular wickets and ended up pulling off one of the great wins, with wacky (5/40) taking his 5th and their final wicket with Newport still 6 runs short. Indy was the other destroyer from the other end taking a very impressive 5/14. In the second innings Foota made 65* and Dan Raniolo 34.
Rnd 6- (SUCC 8/258 def Kingsville Baptists 10/177) Indy and Henry were the main run scorers in our innings with 79 and 59, with Foota 37 and VJ 18* getting us to a very competitive score of 258. With the ball we took regular wickets and were disciplined enough to keep Kingsville Baptists to 177, Leigh was the pick of the bowlers taking 4/41 and wacky bowled very tightly taking 3/41 off 21 overs. The Highlight of the game I feel was Henry’s classic diving catch at mid off, all of 5cms off the ground and the crowd loved it!!!
